Bump Diaries: The Sequel

The 2024 Baby Registry Checklist: Essentials for Baby (and Gifts for Moms, Too!)

When I found out I was expecting my second child, I thought I’d have everything figured out—I mean, I’d done this before, right? But as the weeks went by, I realized that even as a “seasoned” mom, creating a registry (and deciding whether to have a shower) can still feel overwhelming. This is why I decided to create my personal 2024 baby registry checklist and share my tips with all of you. The truth is, no two pregnancies are alike, and deciding what’s right for you and your family is incredibly personal.

After a lot of thought, and some nudging from my mom, friends, and sisters-in-law, I decided to create a registry and have a small shower for our second little one. There’s a noticeable age gap between my son and baby number two, and quite honestly, I no longer have any of the essentials from my first pregnancy. It is also important to me, that close friends and family share in this new chapter. More on this in a minute.

In that vein, I thought it may be helpful to provide some practical guidance and keep myself organized. This checklist is a mix of practical must-haves, thoughtful touches, and yes, a few things just for mom (because we’re doing a lot of work, too!). Whether you’re prepping for baby number one, two, or even three, or looking for ideas to support a mom-to-be in your life, here’s everything you need to make those early days as smooth and joyful as possible.

Should You Have a Shower or Registry for a Second Child?

Before we get into the checklist, I want to touch on a hot topic- whether or not to have a shower and/or registry with a second child. If you’re preparing for your second (or third!) baby, you might be wondering if a registry or shower is appropriate. The short answer? It’s entirely up to you and what feels right for your family.

For some, a registry for a second child can feel practical, especially if you’re gearing up with items for a different gender, or season, or if there’s a big gap between your kids. Needs change, and so do baby products. As you can imagine, after moving five times over the last six years, I don’t have most of the essentials I had with Bryson. It’s also important to me that Paul gets the full-on experience of a first-time dad, and our baby girl gets a celebration. A registry can be a way for friends and family to share in the excitement and support you with things they know you’ll love and need.

On the flip side, some parents prefer to keep things simple the second time around. They might have most of the essentials from their first child or want to forgo a shower. In these cases, smaller gatherings like “sprinkles” (mini-showers) are growing in popularity. These events are usually low-key—a brunch or casual get-together with close friends and family to celebrate the new addition.

No matter what you decide, know that every baby is a beautiful reason to celebrate—whether with a big gathering, a quiet sprinkle, a simple registry, or a family toast to the next chapter.

Top Must-Have Baby Registry Items for 2024

Below is the 2024 baby registry checklist I’ve curated based on my experience and extensive research into what other moms find most valuable in 2024. I tried to make it as comprehensive as possible to serve as a guide for moms out there and provide family/friends of new moms with some gift ideas for the expectant mom. I hope you find this helpful, especially as we head into “gift-giving” season and, of course, Black Friday sales galore.

Baby Registry Baby Gear Recommendations

  • Car Seat: A car seat is a non-negotiable, and one of the items you’ll want to research to figure out what’s right for you. Some parents choose a convertible car seat that’s adaptable for infants so they get the longevity. I switched Bryson’s car seat when he turned one anyway, so I decided to go with an infant car seat this time.  Outside of safety ratings, I prefer a car seat that is easy to install, portable, and adapts to my stroller easily. Can you tell we’re on the go a lot?  Other preferences you may want to consider include comfort/fabric and vehicle fit. A note on safety: while all car seats must meet federal safety standards, if you plan on purchasing second-hand, be aware of the make and model of the car seat. You’ll want to check for recalls and whether or not it meets current safety standards

My pick this time around: Nuna Pipa RX

  • Stroller: This is, perhaps, one of my most important items. I walk– a lot. I used Bryson’s stroller probably longer than I should have, just because we’d go on super long walks throughout the city. It’s important to choose one that fits your lifestyle. Consider how often you’ll use the stroller, what you’ll use it for, and the space you have for storage. I personally love the UppaBaby Cruz because it’s easy to maneuver and store; it also has enough space to throw my groceries, farmers market finds, and necessities required for longer excursions. I’ve loved it so much that I’m getting a second one– and sending Bryson’s (very loved) one to my parent’s house in Maine.

My pick this time around: Uppa Baby Cruz

  • Baby Carrier: Hands-free baby holding? Count me in. There are so many options here—try one that’s cozy, secure, and doesn’t turn wearing a baby into a balancing act. A baby wrap carrier is perfect for newborns, offering a soft, cozy environment that mimics the womb and strengthens bonding. I typically wore Bryson using the baby wrap, while Matt opted for the sturdier, 6-in-1 carrier. The latter is better for the long haul, and grows with your baby, offering versatile carrying positions and long-lasting support as they grow from infancy through toddlerhood.

My picks this time around: Boba Baby Wrap Carrier and the lillebaby Elevate 6-in-1 carrier

Baby Registry Nursery and Sleeping Must-Haves

  • Crib and Mattress:  Look for a crib that meets the latest safety standards, with adjustable mattress heights to accommodate your baby’s growth. For added value, consider convertible cribs that transition from crib to toddler bed, making it a practical choice that grows with your child. I am super excited to test our crib selection because it can grow with the baby from bassinet days through toddler days. Don’t forget to pair the crib with a firm, breathable mattress that fits snugly to support safe sleep and proper development. Bryson was a tough sleeper, and I transitioned him to his bed by the time he was two. I’m hoping to keep this little one in her crib a bit longer than that and get more use of it during her crib years. Pray for us.

My pick this time around: Babyletto Yuzu Crib and Newton Baby Crib Mattress

  • Crib Sheets/Blankets These are super popular gift items from guests because they’re easy to purchase, typically less expensive, and will be used all the time! Again, you have the chance to provide some direction here.

My pick this time around: Babyletto Organic Cotton Crib Sheets

  • Monitor: A baby monitor brings peace of mind by letting you keep an eye (and ear) on your baby from anywhere in the house. Look for one with clear video and audio quality, night vision, and two-way communication so you can soothe your baby without needing to enter the room. There are so many monitors with crazy features out there right now, including breathing and movement tracking, temperature monitoring, and smartphone app connectivity. I opted for a tried and true option from my first pregnancy because it checked all my boxes.

My pick this time around: Infant Optics Baby Monitor

  • Sound Machine and Nightlight:  A sound machine, in general, is a solid investment, but I kid you not, Bryson uses his Hatch now and it’s been a game changer for him. A device like the Hatch combines soothing sounds, gentle night lighting, and a customizable timer, so you can control the ambiance as your baby drifts to sleep and stays asleep longer. Versatility is key here. it grows with your child, adapting from newborn days to toddler sleep routines. I love how it’s practical and feels like a small, nurturing addition to our bedtime ritual.

My pick this time around (if it wasn’t obvious): Hatch Rest Baby Sound Machine

A “nice to have” extra for my stroller/traveling moms: Hatch Rest Go Portable Sound Machine

Baby Registry Feeding Essentials

  • Breast Pump: Before you register for a breast pump, check your insurance. Many insurance companies will cover breast pumps completely free. I’m not adding one to my registry solely because I’ll get one through my insurance company. However, I have heard great things about the Momcozy Hands-Free Breast Pump
  • Bottles and Nipples: Start with a few types and brands—babies can be as picky as they are cute! While Bryson was a terrible sleeper, he was an excellent eater and transitioned between breast and multiple types of bottles so easily. Most babies are not as easy. I’d recommend registering for a bottle variety pack and testing out a few different brands. We ended up going mainly with the Tommy Tippee ones for Bryson, but I’d recommend testing a few out before you commit to one brand.

My pick this time around: Babylist Bottle Box

  • Nursing Pillow: Whether you breastfeed or bottle feed, a great nursing pillow will make your life so much easier. A supportive nursing pillow allows you to feed the baby comfortably, plus it doubles as a lounging spot when they’re learning to sit! There are so many great brands out there, and some provide extra support, like the My Breast Friend. I was really happy with our Boppy Pillow the first time around, so I’m sticking to that one. You do you.

My pick this time around: Boppy Nursing Pillow

  • Formula Mamas: I embrace a “fed is best” mentality, so to all my mamas out there who are exclusively formula feeding or supplementing with formula, this one is for you. While Bryson was mostly breast/breastmilk fed, we did have to supplement with formula at times because, frankly, there was so much going on in our lives at that point, I’d forget to pump or wouldn’t pump enough before hospital stays and/or appointments with Matt. I’ve never used this, but this particular product came as a recommendation from a few of my followers and honestly, this is such a huge time saver!

My pick for my formula mamas: Baby Brezza Formula Pro Advanced

  • Nursing Cover: This is clutch for all my mamas who breastfeed. I can’t tell you how many times I used this cover so I could nurse Bryson, while hanging out with family/friends, on an airplane, or simply out in public with nowhere to breastfeed in private. While technically this can also be used as a blanket or a stroller cover, I used it, most often, as a nursing cover.

My pick this time around: Copper Pearl Multi-Use Cover

Baby Registry Clothing Staples

  • Onesies and Footed Pajamas (ZIPPERED): Skip the elaborate outfits at first and stock up on zippered PJs—trust me, you’ll thank me later. The last thing you want to be doing at 2 AM feedings or amidst a poopy diaper tantrum is unsnap an elaborate onesie. Remember, you’ll want to consider seasonality when adding any clothing or onesies to your registry. And don’t just stick to the newborn stage. Your baby will grow FAST, so stock up on some of those 3-6 month and 6-9 month options, as well.

My Picks this time around: Kyte Baby Footed Pajamas and Burt’s Bees Footed Onesies

A word on clothing; People will buy clothes– trust me. Your registry provides an opportunity to gently steer givers toward your desired aesthetic, provide the appropriate sizing for times of the year, and grab some of those clothing items you’ve been eyeing. However, babies grow fast. If you’re looking for an area to save, this is it.

Bath Time Basics

  • Baby Bathtub: Bath time can be nerve-wracking as a new mom, so go for a bathtub that’s stable and easy to clean. Keep in mind the space you’re going to use for baby baths and where you plan on storing the tub.

My pick this time around: Skiphop Baby Bath Tub

  • Gentle Baby Soap and Shampoo: Look for fragrance-free options that keep your little one’s skin soft without any irritants. Bryson had very sensitive skin as a baby (and toddler), which inherently made me a Cetaphil loyalist. Pro Tip: Add a bathroom/diaper caddy. Gift givers love to put their bathroom finds into a cute little caddy you can use.

My pick this time around: Cetaphil Baby Wash and Shampoo and Natemia Diaper Caddy

  • Rinse Cups and Bathtime Accessories: Gone are the days of using Ricotta cheese containers to rinse your baby (mom). I STILL use Bryson’s rinse cup to this day, when he opts for a tub and not for a shower. This year, I’ve also decided to splurge on getting some additional “nice to haves” to go along with it, including an elbow and knee saver! GENIUS!

My pick this time around: Lalo Bathtime Essentials and Towel Bundle

  • Soft Hooded Towels: A hooded towel keeps your baby warm and makes for some adorable post-bath photos. Get a few so you aren’t constantly washing the same one over and over again.

My pick this time around: KeaBabies Bamboo Hooded Towel

Baby Registry Diapering (The most glamorous registry items)

  • Diapers:  Whether you’re planning to use disposable or cloth, having the right diapers on hand is crucial. Newborns can go through 8-12 diapers a day, so stocking up is never a bad idea! I’d recommend registering for multiple sizes, so you have a little reprieve as the baby grows. If you’re going the disposable route, brands with wetness indicators or eco-friendly options can be great choices. I am a Pampers loyalist, but there are many great options out there. My sister went the cloth diaper route with her daughter and is super happy with her decision. Since I know you’re reading this, Lindsay, feel free to share your thoughts with my audience.

My pick this time around: Pampers Swaddlers

  • Odor-Locking Diaper Pail: Forever grateful to my sister-in-law for this recommendation. A good diaper pail, like the Ubbi or Diaper Genie, is a lifesaver in the nursery, helping to lock in odors and keep things fresh. Look for a pail with easy refill options and odor-sealing technology to minimize smells. Many models have a sleek design that doesn’t stand out in the nursery, making them practical and discreet.

My pick this time around: Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail (in taupe)

  • Baby Wipes High-quality, gentle wipes are a must for every diaper change. Look for wipes that are hypoallergenic and free from harsh chemicals to avoid skin irritation. Wipes aren’t just for bums, my friends. I used wipes for so much more than a diaper change, especially since we were on the go so often.

My pick this time around: Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes

  • Diaper Bag: This is one of those super personal, but essential, decisions, especially if you plan on exiting the house with your little one. A well-organized diaper bag keeps all those important items—diapers, wipes, bottles, and a change of clothes—in one place. Look for a bag with multiple compartments, insulated pockets, and comfortable straps to keep everything organized and easy to access. I prefer the backpack-style design because it makes hands-free toting so much easier.

My pick this time around: Dagne Dover Diaper Bag Backpack

Nice to Have Extras for Your Baby Registry

Beyond the basics, there are some wonderful “nice to have” items that can make both you and your baby more comfortable, help develop early skills, and help set the aesthetic of your nursery.

  1. Play Gym or Playmat: A soft, colorful play gym or playmat offers a safe, engaging space for tummy time, sensory development, and early play. Look for options with hanging toys, textures, and contrasting colors, which are great for visual and motor development. Plus, having a designated play space is helpful for your peace of mind!

My pick this time around: Loverly Stage-Based Activity Gym & Playmat

  1. Nursery Decor: I love designing the nursery. My imagination runs wild and, I’ll admit, it’s more for me than for the baby. Family and friends may want to contribute, but this is where you need to provide direction or you’ll get items that just don’t match your aesthetic. Whether it’s cute wall art, a mobile, or some cozy lighting, nursery decor allows you to craft the perfect space for your little one. Even simple decor pieces like a special blankets, swaddles, or wall decals can bring a unique charm.
  1. Baby Bouncer:  Having a safe, comfortable space to put down your little one is borderline essential. Find one that’s lightweight and portable, making it easy to move them from room to room as you go about your day. Note: Bouncers are always a big debate and some babies adapt well while others don’t. There may be some trial and error here, making it a perfect registry item.

My pick this time around: Baby Bjorn Bouncer

  1. High Chair: Though you won’t need a high chair right away, it’s handy to have on your registry for when solids begin. Adjustable, easy-to-clean high chairs with secure harnesses make meal times easier and help babies sit comfortably as they explore new foods. This time around, I wanted something that would grow with her while also blending with the ambiance of our kitchen.

My pick this time around: Stokke Tripp Trapp Highchair

  1. Baby Feeding Accessories: Having a few extra bibs, burp cloths, and feeding utensils can save a lot of laundry time and keep messes under control as your baby starts on their feeding journey. Bibs with catch pockets, easy-to-grip spoons, and silicone placemats are all the rage in 2024. Anything that helps minimize messes gets an A plus in my book.

My picks this time around: Babybjorn Baby Bibs and the Lalo Smock Bib

  1. Changing Pad: A comfortable, easy-to-clean changing pad can be a huge help for diaper changes, providing a safe and cushioned surface for your baby. Look for one with raised sides and a contoured shape to keep your baby secure, plus a wipeable or waterproof cover to make cleanup quick and easy. When we were at the house, I always changed Bryson in his room and used the changing pad. Other moms don’t find them as valuable because they don’t typically go to the nursery for changes. Do what makes sense for you.

My pick this time around: Keekaroo Wipeable Changing Pad

What about Mom? Self-Care Essentials and Gift Ideas

After months of pregnancy and endless prep, a little pampering can feel like magic. If you’re a mom-to-be (or know one), here are some thoughtful gift ideas:

  • Spa Gift Card: A massage or facial in the final weeks of pregnancy can be so refreshing. Just make sure it’s a prenatal-safe spa!
  • Personalized Jewelry: Something simple, like an initial necklace or birthstone bracelet, can be a beautiful way to honor this new chapter.
  • Subscription Box: A monthly self-care box filled with snacks, teas, and pampering goodies can bring small joys during those long days.
  • Meal Delivery: The last thing you want to do as a new mom is worry about what the rest of the family will be eating in the weeks after giving birth. Grubhub/Doordash gift cards, meal delivery services, or even meal trains can be a great way to provide something super practical that the whole family will appreciate.
  • Wine or “no-no” beverage of choice: Did you think I wouldn’t throw in a plug here? In all reality, I’m looking forward to my first glass of bubbles after the baby girl arrives, especially if I get to share it with my friends and family. OneHope has some great wine gifts, to quote my mom, “just saying.”

Paul asked me to let you know that a Knicks Starter Jacket is a great gift for all the hard work men are doing throughout pregnancy.

Creating a registry that feels right for you and your family is all about mixing essentials with a few personal touches. To all my moms out there, feel free to share some of your favorite registry items and suggestions.

Christina’s Pregnancy Update at almost 24 weeks

I haven’t provided an update through my blog in a while, but the second trimester has lived up to what it should be– a reprieve from the first trimester before the total discomfort of the third trimester. We had our anatomy scan at 20 weeks, and I’m beyond relieved to say that everything looked perfect! Seeing her in such clear detail was like a balm for my lingering anxiety, bringing a real sense of calm to this part of the journey. Physically, I’m feeling like a different person than I did in the first trimester—so much more energy, and thankfully, that first-trimester nausea is finally in the rearview. Sleep has been a bit of a challenge and I constantly feel stuffed up, but outside of that, I’d say symptoms have been minimal.

My belly is definitely on the fast track to full bloom—maybe there’s truth to the whole “second-time-around-you-pop-sooner” theory? Our girl is right on track, measuring exactly as she should, and she’s already a little firecracker in there, moving all the time. The other night, Paul felt her kick for the first time, and seeing his face light up made my heart feel just a little bigger. Our next big milestone is coming up at 26 weeks with my gestational diabetes test, and from there, it’s on to bi-weekly appointments as we get closer to meeting her! We’re heading up to Maine for Thanksgiving, likely our last big trip before she arrives, and then it’s onto our maternity shoot, nursery set-up, and baby shower! The time is flying my friends and I just can’t wait for you to meet our baby girl.

Until next time,

Christina
